Western Maryland Railroad and National Pike
The 2014 MD/DE Rally in the mountains offers the perfect getaway! The Cumberland area provides breathtaking scenery through Maryland’s western mountains, the National Road, and an area that is rich in history and small town charm. Come and be embraced in the warmth and hospitality of this beautiful western Maryland town, tucked in the valley of Maryland’s mountains.
You will have your choice of rides every day through some of the most beautiful areas in the country. National Geographic ranks the Cumberland Allegheny Passage in the top 15 most beautiful places in the world. There will be scenic guided rides, rides to historical locations such as Paw Paw tunnel which was cut through the mountains to cut 6 miles off the canal for transportation. Casselmann Bridge is the largest arched bridge of its time. Take a ride on the steam engine through the mountains to historic Frostburg, and then watch it being turned on the turnstile. There is a discount code for the train on the Schedule page!! Check out the details of the train and the route at www.wmsr.com. Tour the tunnels under Emmanuals church from the French and Indian war. See George Washington’s headquarters (yes, he really DID sleep here). See the Romney trenches, the best example of existing civil war trenches. We’ll have a guided ride to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA, a beautiful tribute to the heroes onboard Flight 93 on 9/11.
Don’t miss the opening night Meet and Greet with bands, food and fun. Meet your other rally attendees for socializing and a cornhole challenge. Friday night come and park your bikes along the main street, which is closed to traffic, while you dine and enjoy several bands along the street – food and adult beverages will be available. Don’t worry about being out late on your bike, the rally has great “walkability”…both host hotels are within walking distance of each other and all of the evening events, museums, and historical points of interest.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking, white water rafting, or biking along the Allegheny Passage and alongside the steam or diesel train engine.
